A Direct Hit
- Step back in time to the late ‘80s, at a time when the world of music technology was witnessing innovation after innovation. Sampling was in, analog synthesizers were being upstaged by their sharper digital descendants, and guitar players were discovering a compact, reliable, consistent alternative to valve amps that was solid-state technology.
- This growing demand in alternatives to the old school of heavy temperamental amps was answered by a number of manufacturers and industry names who raced to emulate the elusive tube sound—that’s where Tech 21 came in.
- The SansAmp was released in 1989, and it was a guitar pedal that immediately looked like it had a lot going on under the hood. More than just a distortion pedal, this little black box was designed to give guitarists a convincing amped-up sound straight into the desk. To this day, it’s considered the first amp-in-a-box solution offered to musicians.
- By today’s standards, its amp emulation may not be perfect. But, like many innovative and novel bits of gear, it transcended its original purpose. Its relative wealth of controls, modes, and coloration options made it a surprisingly effective saturator, great for injecting grit and warmth into any sound. Its notoriety landed it in the hands of countless musicians, from Kurt Cobain’s iconic screaming guitars to Tchad Blake’s signature parallel saturation heard on records by Arctic Monkeys, The Black Keys, and many more. Today, Dist OPAMP-21 puts all that op-amp character and more right in your DAW.

The Sound of Heat
- Many of music’s most legendary guitar riffs, iconic vocal lines, and soul-stirring mixes simply wouldn’t have been possible without the humble vacuum tube.
- These decades-old components are temperamental in their behavior, fragile in their operation, and limited in their lifespan. Yet their ability to produce a beautifully even harmonic response gives any valve-processed sound a rich, warm, smooth character that’s hard to match.
- Couple this with their unique ability to dynamically distort incoming sounds with varying levels of grit and aggression, and you’ve got a formula that remains irresistible to musicians, producers, and audio trailblazers to this day.
- Whether it’s a vocal line in need of some extra color, a drum bus that needs some crunch, or your guitar and synth tracks begging for some edgy crunch, Dist TUBE-CULTURE puts this sought-after sonic attitude in your hands.
- Experience the stunning sound of a modern studio classic reimagined in virtual form
A Modern Crunch Classic
- In an age of digital precision and demanding hi-def audio, sometimes you just want good old fashioned analog fatness
- In the late ’90s, as the music production world was becoming ever more focused on the flexibility of working with computers, and the DAW was beginning to dominate, some manufacturers sought to buck the trend.
- Enter UK-based Thermionic Culture, a small company committed to the belief that valve-driven gear couldn’t be beaten on sound. In 1998, they released The Culture Vulture, an all-valve stereo distortion rack unit, designed to counter the increasingly sterile world of digital music production.
- Offering up a proverbial rainbow of saturation, coloration, and distortion applications, this unassuming piece of handwired gear ultimately became one of the world’s most coveted bits of studio hardware, used by everyone from Deadmau5 to Queens of the Stone Age’s Josh Homme. Now you too can explore this modern classic, faithfully emulated and tastefully enhanced.
Arturia 1973-Pre Vintage Preamp Plug-In Licence (Download)
The downloaded 1973-Pre Vintage Preamp Plug-In and License from Arturia is an emulation of the classic 1073 hardware preamp designed by Rupert Neve back in 1970. It can be used by producers, sound engineers, and artists on Mac and Windows computers, to capture a taste of that harmonically rich, classic tone in your DAW and music programs.
The 1973-Pre allows you to creatively shape your signal with low-, mid-, and high-band controls. The low-band controls let you balance the bass content in your signal, the mid-band can add presence, or cut the mud, and the high-band can add shine and air, or remove any unwanted sharpness. Additionally, the input gain controls how much of your signal is sent through the circuitry. Subtle levels introduce the brilliance that the 1073 is known for.

Arturia TridA-Pre Musical Equalizer Plug-In (Download)
The TridA-Pre Musical Equalizer Plug-In download from Arturia is an emulation of the classic ’60s and ’70s Trident A Range console that became well known for its gorgeous, musical EQ, and the full, rich tone it imparts. This EQ plug-in can be used by producers, sound engineers, and artists on Mac and Windows computers, to capture a taste of that harmonically rich, classic tone in your DAW and music programs.
The TridA-Pre allows you to creatively shape your signal with low, high mid, low mid, and low EQ bands. Each has 4 switchable frequencies calibrated to match the original unit’s specification. These can be cut or boosted by 15 dB independently on the left and right channels or linked together. This gives you great freedom to shape your sound in a stereo space.
Furthermore, notch out the high end at 9, 12, or 15 kHz, or hit 2 or 3 switches to make more dramatic changes. Use the input gain to create super-subtle overtones to growling solid-state drive. To bring the EQ legend up to date, some optional enhancements have been added to make the most of your DAW: EQ bypass, automatic gain control, phase inversion, and stereo link. Arturia V76-Pre License (Download)
The downloaded V76-Pre and License from Arturia is an emulation of the classic Telefunken V76 preamp incorporated in the REDD mixing console at Abbey Road studio coveted for the 1968 Beatles White Album sound. This plug-in can be used by producers, sound engineers, and artists on Mac and Windows computers, to capture a taste of that harmonically rich, classic tone in your DAW and music programs.
The V76-Pre’s equalizer is modeled on a modified Telefunken V612, giving you access to a musically-placed high shelf and low shelf. The main control of the preamp lets you increase the strength of the incoming signal, passing it through the virtual circuitry and vacuum tube. It starts to get more of its tonal flavor the hotter the signal gets, delivering a harmonically rich soft-clipping.
Furthermore, the high-pass lets you remove low bass frequencies at 80 Hz and roll-off high energy low end at 300 Hz. You can use both together to create a more dramatic effect. In addition, some optional enhancements have been added to make the most of your DAW: EQ bypass, automatic gain control, phase inversion, and stereo link.
