The API 550 from Waves is a plug-in developed in association with API that models two classic API equalization modules. The API 550A module is modeled on the legendary late ’60s hardware and provides reciprocal and repeatable equalization at fifteen points in five steps of boost, divided into three overlapping ranges. The high and low frequency ranges are individually selectable as either peaking or shelving, and a band-pass filter can be inserted independently of all other settings.

The API 550B functions both as a problem solver and a sweetening device, and provides four overlapped EQ bands with seven switchable filter frequencies spanning up to five octaves per band. “Proportional Q” automatically widens the filter bandwidth at minimal settings and narrows it at higher settings. The EQ can undo previous processing, or even perform reverse tonal modifications.

The API 560 from Waves is a plug-in based on the classic hardware EQ module from API, providing 10-bands of graphic EQ featuring precision filtering and high headroom, ideal for signal enhancement and room tuning.

The original’s “Proportional Q” design intuitively widens the filter bandwidth at lower boost/cut levels and narrows it at higher settings. And since boost and cut characteristics are identical, previous actions can be easily undone.

AudioTrack from Waves is a plug-in that features three complete processors in a single, easy-to-use interface. Ideal for multimedia, voiceovers, project studios, and more, the plug-in contains a four-band EQ, compressor/expander, and a gate.

Bass Rider from Waves is a plug-in that rides bass levels automatically, without changing the natural sound of the instrument. Optimized for the frequency range and envelope characteristics of bass instruments, the plug-in functions equally well on any bass tracks, DI, amplified, acoustic, synthesizer, upright, etc. Unlike a compressor, the processor works note by note without disturbing the inner dynamics, allowing for natural sustain and decay.

Available for download, Waves Brauer Motion is a stereo effects tool that takes its inspiration from its eponymous codesigner, Michael Brauer, an engineer recognized for creating particularly moving mixes for artists including Bob Dylan, Coldplay, and others.

The plug-in works by giving you two different auto-panners that can be made to move around each other in various, interesting ways. They can also be synced to each other, or be made to move independently. Either way, you can sync the panning operation to a host tempo or operate in free mode, in which the speed parameter controls the rate of panning. You can also choose input mode, wherein the signal’s amplitude dictates the rate of movement. In this mode, positive amplitudes (level boosts) will result in moving a selected panner forward along its path of trajectory, while losses in level will cause the effect to reverse course and move in the opposite direction. 

Four different panning modes are on hand for each panner, and four different trigger modes give you various ways of directing the motion of the effect. Classic mode provides standard left to right panning, while Circle gives you a more spherical path. Circle Phase is much like Circle, but the signal flips out of phase halfway through the path, giving you the illusion that the sound is moving behind your head. X-Lights mode provides hard, alternate left to right panning.

A dynamics section is on hand to compress or clip the signal’s level, while other parameters give you the ability to manipulate speed, width, and depth of each panning effect. A master section with gain and mix controls is also provided. You’ll also note the sphere display, which shows how the sounds are moving by putting them on a large visible globe. 

This plug-in can work on stereo sources, panning them around in interesting ways, or it can effectively stereoize a mono source. Presets are included from some of the industry’s most respected mix engineers, including Ross Hogarth, Tony Maserati, and more.

The BSS DPR-402 from Waves is an accurate software model of the hardware BSS DPR-402 dynamics processor, a long-time favorite of studio, live, and broadcast engineers. The dynamics processor is known for its punch, versatility, and the explosive sound it delivered on countless rock, dance, and hip-hop hits since the 80s.

Although it can be used as a straightforward compressor, limiter, or de-esser, the unit really excels when the processes are combined, and when used to selectively process individual parts of the audio band. The possibilities range from low-frequency expansion and narrow-band compression, to general dynamic equalization, or creating surprising enhancement effects.

Five features not found on the original have been added to the plug-in. These include an MS matrix to separately process the mid and the sides, a mix control to balance the processed and unprocessed signal, a noise control to add or remove the modeled noise of the original unit, a gain reduction control, and an option for separate L/R metering.

Butch Vig Vocals from Waves is a plug-in designed in collaboration with producer Butch Vig that accurately captures his signature vocal sound, presented within a single interface. The plug-in features EQ controls, a compressor and a de-esser, and several tools for coloring the vocals in numerous shades, including tube and solid state saturation, and a focus knob in the 1 and 2 kHz ranges.

C1 Compressor from Waves is a dynamics processor plug-in featuring three distinct modules. The compressor/expander, gate/expander, filter/EQ sections allow the plug-in to fulfill multiple functions, either as separate processors, or combined for maximum flexibility. C4 Multiband from Waves is a multiband dynamics processor plug-in that features four bands of up and down expansion, limiting, and compression, along with dynamic and standard EQ. The C6 from Waves is a plug-in based on the company’s C4 processor. An interesting addition is the echo throw section. By hitting the throw button it’s possible to add long delays to any choice of words with a single click. And all tempos are matched to the session BPM, cutting out any the guesswork as to delay times.

Available for download, Waves CLA MixDown is part of their Artist Signature Series collection and is designed to sit on your master buss in a relatively set-and-forget kind of way. In fact, Waves recommends that you instantiate the plug-in at the beginning of the mixing phase and perform all subsequent decisions through its processing.

Its GUI gives you six faders, some controlling a whole host of under-the-hood parameters, others performing simpler functions. Input and output are relatively straightforward to grasp; however, above the input fader you’ll find a virtual LED which goes from green to yellow to red. Waves recommends that you aim for yellow on the input stage to better achieve the drive and warmth by which Chris Lorde-Alge—this plug-in’s namesake—is known.

The four faders between MixDown’s I/O stage give you control over Bass, Treble, Glue, and Drive. Bass and Treble emphasize/de-emphasize their respective frequency bands, through bass has an effect on the compressor as well. In a broader way, Glue is your one-stop compression shop, with two switchable compressor circuits provided—one modern and punchy, the other giving you a longer time constant for less pumping. Drive, on the other hand, dictates the level of harmonic distortion applied to the overall signal; this control is said to emulate driving signal (quite heartily) into the mix buss of an SSL console.

At unity, these faders have not been set to transparency, but rather, to Chris Lorde-Alge’s specific predilections (as one might mix into a Pultec equalizer and an SSL compressor, with settings already dialed in). Adjusting a fader does boost or attenuate a parameter, but unity does not zero out any processing; it merely returns the processing to CLA’s preferred default. MixDown, which is compatible with Mac and Windows platforms, also works as a processor for stereo-instrument busses (for instance, drums). Mono instances are also available. The plug-in operates in AAX, AU, Audiosuite, VST, and VST3 formats.

CLA Unplugged from Waves is an effects plug-in designed by Chris Lord-Alge primarily for use on “acoustic” sources such as vocals, strings, piano, acoustic guitars, and nylon guitar solos. The CLA-3A from Waves is a plug-in modeled after a famous early 70’s solid-state compressor that was originally known for its unique and highly transparent compression curve. Features of the original included a quick response and the subtle harmonic distortion, both of which are faithfully recreated in the software version. The plug-in is especially useful on bass, as well as on guitars and vocals.

The CLA-76 from Waves is a plug-in that features models (Blacky and Bluey) of the famed mid ’60s Class-A line-level limiting amplifier. A favorite studio tool, the original hardware had a super fast attack—as quick as 50 microseconds—that is reproduced in the software model. The plug-in can be used on numerous sources, but really shines when processing drums.

Also featured is the All Ratio Buttons In setting that provided the trademark overdriven tone of the original, along with modeled preamp distortion. The original hardware underwent numerous revisions after it was first introduced with a blue strip on a silver faceplate. The black-face version added low-noise circuits on additional circuit boards and reduced distortion. Both versions are represented here.

Doppler from Waves is a plug-in that produces the sonic effect of a sound source moving towards or away from a listener, simulating the classic Doppler effect. The plug-in allows for control of the frequency change, speed, and distance from the sonic source with pinpoint accuracy.

Doubler from Waves is a plug-in that can automatically create a double-track effect, especially useful for vocals. Using adjustable delay and pitch modulation, the plug-in adds a rich texture on vocals, but works equally well on polyphonic instruments and full mixes.

The Eddie Kramer Bass Channel from Waves is a plug-in designed to achieve a fat bass sound with a lot of presence, that cuts through a mix without being overbearing. The Eddie Kramer Effects Channel from Waves is a plug-in which features processor settings that Kramer has used over the years. Basically, the software includes a delay and reverb processor with a choice of two starting points. Controls for delay time and reverb size are provided.

H-Slap is a shorter delay that emulates tape at 15 inches per second, with some EMT plate reverb at a medium setting. Z-Slap features a longer delay reminiscent of tape running at 7.5 inches per second with a bit of feedback, with a longer setting on the EMT plate reverb. The plug-in includes both Native and SoundGrid licenses.

The Eddie Kramer Guitar Channel from Waves is a plug-in designed to processes guitar tracks and features settings for lead guitars and two types of rhythm guitars. Aside from EQ, compression, reverb, delay, and flange, the software provides three input modes, Rhythm 1, Rhythm 2, and Lead.

For the rhythm guitars, the processing allows them to be “upfront” without sounding over processed. And for the lead guitars, the software delivers enough processing options to have them be exciting and to come “alive.” The plug-in includes both Native and SoundGrid licenses.

The signal type can be set to generate a sine wave signal, white noise, or pink noise. Sine waves are commonly used when tuning instruments and checking specific frequencies. White noise is helpful when taking SPL measurements. Pink noise is preferred when setting up and tuning PA systems. When the signal type is set to Sine, sweepable frequency and gain controls are available. In stereo mode, the output signal can be routed to the left, right, or both. And boost the high end to enhance the shimmer of the cymbals, or compress them hard to bring out other aspects of their sound.

The Kramer HLS Channel from Waves is a plug-in that models the microphone preamp and EQ section of a ’60s Helios mixing console. The plug-in was developed in association with producer/engineer Eddie Kramer, a prominent engineer at London’s Olympic Studios and who used their Helios console during a period that yielded many classic rock n’ roll recordings.

The unique behavior, coloration, and drive of the Helios console’s preamps were modeled along with the equalizers, renowned for their sweet saturation, high-end presence, and fat low-frequency boost. For added authenticity the console’s inherent noise and hum was also included. The plug-in also features a precision-modeled VU meter that recreates the sensitivity, ballistic behavior, look, and feel of the original.

Kramer Master Tape from Waves is a plug-in that models the audio characteristics of a vintage 1/4″ reel-to-reel tape machine. The plug-in provides the usual controls found on tape machines, such as adjustable tape speed, bias, and flux, in addition to control over things that were at one time considered faults. Wow and flutter and noise can these days be considered desirable characteristics in some circumstances to add a tape-like signature to digital audio.

The plug-in also includes what was once an unintended consequence of using tape, namely a flexible slap and feedback delay, ideal for rock, dance, dub, or any other audio application. For recording, mixing, mastering, and more, the plug-in delivers the richness and warmth of real tape saturation to any DAW.

The Kramer PIE Compressor from Waves is a mono/stereo dynamics plug-in modeled on a vintage analog Pye compressor heard on numerous classic rock records. The plug-in emulates the original down to replicating the VU meter’s superfast refresh rates, recreating the accuracy, sensitivity, and ballistic behavior of the physical analog meter. The compressor itself has compression ratios up to 5:1 as well as a limiter mode, and features auto make-up gain.

L1 Ultramaximizer from Waves is a plug-in that provides dynamics control for any audio application, from multimedia to mastering. The software features look-ahead peak limiting, level maximization, and high resolution re-quantization, and is known for its transparency and punch.

L2 Ultramaximizer from Waves is a plug-in that provides dynamics control for mixing, mastering, and more. The software features look-ahead brickwall peak limiting, level maximization, and ultra high resolution re-quantization for crystal clear level gain.

The L3 Multimaximizer from Waves is a plug-in that performs multi-band peak limiting, delivered in two versions. The Multimaximizer and Ultramaximizer plug-ins both utilize the Peak Limiting Mixer (PLMixer) engine with the only difference being less control provided on the Ultramaximizer.

The plug-in uses linear phase crossover filters to divide the audio spectrum into five bands. The PLMixer then uses psychoacoustic criteria to intelligently decide how much attenuation to apply to each band so that all available headroom is used.

The result is that inter-modulation is minimized and overall loudness is maximized, while brick-wall limiting and a single master threshold control are both maintained. With its transparent operation, brick-wall limiting, dithering, and noise shaping control, the L3 is able to function as a complete mastering processor.

The Linear Phase EQ from Waves is a plug-in created with mastering as its main focus. The linear phase filters preserve the original musical balance with absolutely zero phase shift, while providing precise control over the harmonic spectrum.

The Linear Phase Multiband Compressor from Waves is a multiband dynamics plug-in for mixing, mastering, and more. The software utilizes technologies like Adaptive Thresholds, Automatic Makeup Gain, and Finite Response Filters.

The inclusion of linear phase crossovers allows the plug-in to function without any phase-based distortion, and each of the five bands features threshold, gain, range, attack and release controls for transparent multiband compression.

LoAIR from Waves is a plug-in for generating and enhancing subharmonic content in music or sound effects. The Manny Marroquin Delay from Waves is a delay plug-in created in collaboration with Grammy winning mixing engineer Manny Marroquin. The processor can enhance the feel of a groove, and create layers of sound which can make a mix more exciting and multi-dimensional.

Several extras have been added to the delay that can make any sound even more interesting – reverb, a little bit of distortion, a doubler/harmonizer to fatten things up, plus a phaser. “DeBoxy” tackles the issue of the low-mid spectrum, while the “DeHarsher” control eliminates harshness in the mid- to high-middle frequencies. “DeEsser” works as described by attenuating high “sss” and “shh” sounds. The plug-in includes both Native and SoundGrid licenses.

Maserati ACG from Waves is an acoustic guitar enhancing plug-in featuring Tony Maserati’s favorite settings for controling and boosting the energy of acoustic guitar tracks. Contour 1 provides a studio or small venue room ambience; contour 2 is a larger chamber with reflective pre-delays, most suited for slow ballads; and contour 3 is set up for quicker tempo songs with a very small room and matching pre-delay.

MaxxVolume from Waves is a four-way dynamics processor plug-in that combines several technologies from the company’s other processors into a single, unified interface. Building on the L2 Ultramaximizer, C1 Parametric Compander, Renaissance Vox, and Renaissance Compressor, the plug-in provides a unique functionality for mixing and mastering, as well as broadcast and post-production.

When used with vocals, the processor allows the vocal to stay in focus with automatic level riding. When working with instruments, the plug-in can control the dynamic range without the artifacts of compressors and limiters. MV2 from Waves is a compressor plug-in that is as effective as it is deceptively simple. With high and low level compression controlled by a streamlined interface, the plug-in is the simplest, most flexible way to control sound using intuitive dual faders for quick dynamic optimization.

NLS from Waves is a modeling plug-in that brings the warm sounds of three, vintage console summing busses, to a DAW. It allows for adding depth, crunch, analog noise, and harmonic distortion to individual tracks, busses, or both. Modeled consoles include an SSL 4000G, EMI TG12345 Mk 4, and a customized 60/92 Neve 5116.

Over thirty channels on each console, plus their master busses were sampled, and different modeled channels can be selected on each of the three consoles, creating a non-linear summing system. Non-linear summing is the natural effect of an analog environment, offering a larger sound, more headroom, and a wider stereo image.

The NS1 Noise Suppressor from Waves is a noise suppression plug-in with a single-fader operation. It can differentiate between dialog and unwanted noise and is designed for post-production, audio forensics, and musical applications.

The PAZ Analyzer from Waves is an audio analysis plug-in that generates a comprehensive real-time visual representation of the audio’s stereo positioning, frequency spread, and peak/RMS levels. It shows the peak and RMS displays with individually re-settable peak hold values, and provides optional resolution in 10 Hz steps for precise analysis below 250 Hz. The analysis graphic output can be saved as a text file.

The Primary Source Expander from Waves is an expander/ducker plug-in designed to provide a simple and efficient interface for live or live-in-the-studio use. By default, it works as an expander, to reduce background bleed and noise when a source is not playing. Alternatively, it can be used as a ducker, to reduce the level of a source when a different signal is playing.

The Primary Source Expander features a sidechain that can be triggered internally or externally. The sidechain offers filters with frequency controls, plus a tweakable delay for the sidechain input. The PuigChild Compressor from Waves is a plug-in that emulates the sound of the legendary Fairchild compressor. Originally designed for vinyl mastering, what’s left of the remaining hardware units command “artwork” prices and are virtual unavailable to most people.

However, the sound characteristics of the unit are universally sought after. The plug-in captures all the nuances of Jack Joseph Puig’s Fairchild 670, along with every detail regarding its rich and complex harmonic output. Linked and unlinked modes are included, as is a lateral vertical mode for optimal stereo imaging.

PuigTec EQ from Waves provides a pair of EQ plug-ins that used together provide a full-range, vintage EQ chain. Both original Pultec hardware units on which the plug-ins have been modeled, continue to this day to be mainstays at high-end studios.

The Renaissance Equalizer from Waves is a paragraphic EQ plug-in that features real-time EQ graphing, vintage-modeled filter curves, and extended internal headroom.

The Renaissance Reverb from Waves is a reverb plug-in that features the classic, rich reverb tails of high-end hardware reverbs, while delivering precise control over all aspects of the reverb simulation.

The software provides an advanced early reflection system, and dual-band EQ and damping controls. An interesting feature of the early reflections is the ability to input negative values, thus delaying the dry signal. This can create an interesting bloom effect before the onset of the dry signal.

Renaissance Vox from Waves is a plug-in that provides optimized dynamics control for vocals. The interface features simple, streamlined controls for compression, gate/expansion, limiting, and level maximization. With just a few adjustments, vocals can take on a vivid and smooth sound.

S1 Stereo Imager from Waves is a plug-in that provides the tools to manipulate the spatial imaging of audio material. Using psycho-acoustic techniques, the software can enhance and alter stereo separation using a choice of three components. It can, among other things, make the stereo field wider or narrower, place objects outside of the speakers, or compensate for a “lopsided” image.

The Scheps 73 from Waves is a three-band EQ plug-in modeled after the Neve 1073 console’s EQ and microphone preamp module, and developed in association with mixing engineer Andrew Scheps. Whether for recording, mixing, or mastering, the plug-in delivers the warm tones of the renowned studio hardware. The plug-in includes both Native and SoundGrid licenses.

The plug-in features interrelated bands that adhere to the original hardware specifications. This includes a fixed 12 kHz high-frequency band, switchable low and midrange bands with cut and boost controls, and an 18 dB per octave high-pass filter. Additionally, a 10 kHz midrange band discovered in the original 1073 schematics but operable only on the rare 1078 channel strip has been incorporated.

The Waves MS matrix has been added for applying different equalization to mid and side stereo content. By modeling the acclaimed Marinair transformer, the plug-in meticulously captures all the sonic characteristics of the 1073, including its harmonic distortion. These overtones were tweaked by Scheps himself, resulting in authentic levels of saturation.

These processes could frequently be swapped in order, but the effect was always one of efficiency, getting you closer to the sound you want without having to patch in external gear. Many plug-ins have operated with this concept in mind, but the Scheps Omni Channel brings some new features into the mix that help you create more realized sounds with just one plug-in instance.

The preamp section, for instance, features a switchable saturation circuit with three types of harmonic distortion. Low- and high-pass filters are on hand to shave off unnecessary frequencies within the preamp. A four-band equalizer section features shelving and parametric bands. Next, you’ll note the DS² section, a processor with its genesis in both traditional split-band de-essing and dynamic equalization. Further expanding the Omni Channel’s functionality, an insert slot allows you to patch in any Waves plug-in you desire, be it a delay, a modulator, or even an additional Omni Channel module.

The modules can be moved around in any order you wish, so you can apply preamp saturation after equalization if that’s the vibe of the track. The software can be used in mixing applications, but zero-latency operation and control-mapping for eMotion LV1 Mixing Consoles makes this plug-in a good choice for FOH engineers. The Scheps Omni Channel Strip is compatible with Mac and Windows platforms, and operates in AAX, AU, Audiosuite, VST, and VST3 formats.

Available for download, the Scheps Parallel Particles plug-in continues in Waves’ recent tradition of massaging incredibly complex processes into simple and intuitive user interfaces. It features four controls (Sub, Air, Bite, and Thick) which shape sound sources in a variety of ways; adding resonances to the bass and treble frequencies, as well as thickening up the midrange and shaping transients. This software is compatible with Mac and Windows platforms, and, depending on your host DAW, can function in AU, RTAS, VST, and AAX formats.

The Smack Attack from Waves is a transient shaper plug-in designed to provide flexible envelope modification of drums, loops, pianos, and other percussive instruments. It can be used in mono or stereo in a variety of hosts and platforms, including the eMotion LV1 mixing console. The Smack Attack’s zero latency, large controls, and simple interface make it ideal for both live and in-the-studio production.

Input signal is displayed as a scrolling, real-time graphic waveform. Lines overlaying the waveform provide visual feedback for sensitivity settings and gain change. As with traditional transient shapers, level controls for attack and sustain are present. Unlike traditional transient shapers, the Smack Attack offers additional controls for the shape and duration of attack and sustain. Independent sensitivity sliders for attack and sustain allow you to set thresholds for transient processing, controlling when the Smack Attack will affect the signal.

Transient shapers tend to significantly change output level. To address that issue and prevent clipping, the Smack Attack features adjustable output level and a selectable limiter. Clip mode allows intentional clipping of signals over 0 dBFS, while keeping final output levels limited to a maximum of -0.1 dBFS. Easily dial in parallel processing via the Mix control.

Modeled after the Solid State Logic SL4000 E Series console, Waves SSL E-Channel is a plug-in that combines the dynamics section of the SL4000 channel strip with the renowned Black Knob 242 equalizer, originally developed by legendary producer George Martin. It delivers the incomparable sound of the classic console’s all-discrete design and its Class-A, VCA chip, and is ideal for recreating that 80’s hard-hitting drum sound.

It faithfully captures the unique sound of the original’s IC input and twin-VCA gain-reduction amplifier design, prized by top engineers for gluing together tracks and tightening up final mixes.

Sub Align from Waves is a plug-in designed to address issues that arise in small to mid-sized venues where the sub and top speakers are wrongly set up or miss-aligned, and access to the system processor is restricted. The software allows control over the delay between tops and subs, and creates a crossover point between them. It enables the engineer to “move” the subs back or forward in relation to the tops, until an alignment point is reached for optimal sound reproduction. To achieve extra clarity and punch, the plug-in also provides control over the subs’ volume and polarity/phase.

SuperTap from Waves is a delay plug-in inspired by the sound and legacy of analog tape. Featuring extensive modulation, panning, and filter options, the software delivers analog style with digital precision. Tempo entry can be achieved automatically using the sync to host tempo functionality, or by using the Tap-Pad feature for tapping in a tempo setting.

Waves Torque is a drum pitch-shifter plug-in designed to provide detailed modification of the pitch of a drum signal in real time for front-of-house and studio mixing engineers in project studios, commercial recording facilities, and live stage applications. Without relying on samples or time-intensive triggering, its Organic ReSynthesis technology allows you to adjust pitch up to a full octave (1200 cents) up or down. It works in mono and stereo and boasts latency as low as 32 samples in the standard component or zero latency in the Torque Live component.

The input signal is shown on the Focus Display, which is a formant analyzer that allows you to identify and fine-tune location of the fundamental pitch. An adjustable threshold makes it easy to prevent pitch-shifting bleed from other drums. The Torque Trim slider provides easy control over the level of the processed signal. TransX from Waves is a processor plug-in that modifies the shape of transients, either sharpening or softening the edges. Use of the software allows for breathing life into dull sounding drum loops, accentuating or attenuating instrumental attacks, and modifying room acoustics. The plug-in can also highlight sustains and can be used on individual tracks or, with judicious use, on complete mixes.

TrueVerb from Waves is a reverb plug-in designed to simulate real acoustic spaces. It combines reverb with an early reflections simulator to create natural-sounding virtual acoustic environments. The software features a flexible graphic interface and a wide range of editing parameters.

V-Comp from Waves is a dynamics plug-in that uses time constants and a fixed nominal output gain to recreate the famous output-bus sound signature of a vintage 2254 hardware compressor. The plug-in is very responsive, with only a little gain reduction needed to glue a mix together.

The V-EQ3 from Waves is a three-band EQ plug-in modeled after the 1066 and 1073 console modules, two of the most sought after EQs. It features the same classic frequency cutoff points as the originals, along with a variable high-pass filter.
