Bitwig Studio Producer Music Production and Performance Software (Download, Upgrade from 8-Track) Overview
Designed for the electronic and recording musician, Bitwig Studio Producer is innovative music production and performance software that allows you to quickly come up with ideas, arrange them on a timeline, and perform them with the clip launcher. With its modular structure, you can connect and route audio, MIDI, and CV signals throughout the software, while interfacing with your hardware setup. Integrate your synthesizers, drum machines, and other hardware seamlessly, and keep everything in perfect synchronization.
Bitwig Studio Producer includes the Bitwig Essential Collection and over 90 built-in instruments, effects, modulators, and other devices that are ready for production. The software offers unlimited project tracks, effect tracks, group tracks, and scenes. The use of programwide modulators allows you to connect any plug-in or hardware parameter to LFOs, Note Expression, Macros, Envelope Generators, Audio Side-Chains, and more. Bitwig Studio Producer is cross-platform compatible and works with Windows, macOS, and Linux.

MSEGs: Beyond Envelopes
Segments is a customizable envelope that can be used as a Grid and Polymer module or as a modulator that controls any parameter. Four Play Mode options are available for Segments:
- One-shot: plays through the entire shape (while the voice is alive) when a note is triggered
- Hold: can use any one of the curve’s points as the hold/sustain level, which also acts as the release start
- Looping: can loop forward between any two of the curve’s points on sustain; the loop end point is also the release start
- Ping Pong: can loop forward and backward between any two of the curve’s points on sustain; the loop end point is also the release start
Curves: LFO modulator and Grid module can sync to the beat time or groove.
Scrawl: Draw your own oscillator for The Grid or Polymer, Bitwig’s hybrid modular synth. Antialiasing helps make any shape work and sound natural.
Slopes: Pattern sequencer for The Grid with stereo phase options.
Transfer: Waveshaper for transforming incoming audio or other signals in The Grid.
Clicking any curve display opens the curve editor in a pop-out editor window that allows for easy freehand drawing. There are also shortcuts for jumping to double time or triplets. All your designs can be saved as a BWCURVE file and loaded in another MSEG. A visual browser displays all presets and user content at a glance.
Modulation, Elevated
- Bitwig’s modulation system sets itself apart with a powerfully simple approach: Any control source—including audio or CV signals—can affect any device or plug-in. In Bitwig Studio Producer, modulators are no longer limited to devices—they can grab the mixer and project controls as well. That means one LFO can modulate any device on the same track as well as the track’s panning, sends, and other parameters. Move that LFO to the project level to add modulations to all devices, channel strips, and transport targets.
- Furthermore, MSEGs aren’t the only 5.0 modulators with pop-out editor windows. The Steps and Keytrack+ modulators, as well as The Grid’s data sequencers also now have resizable panes for cleaner editing and some helpful new functions.

Operators
- Chance: Makes each event more or less likely
- Repeats: Allows each event to retrigger at a set rate, or just divide the note length into any number of pieces. Yes, you can ramp the timing of these (and the velocities for note repeats). And a Slice at Repeats option is available to print out the individual events
- Occurrence: Sets conditions for each event, like: Is this the first loop of the clip or not? Is the performance-control Fill button turned on? Or did the previous event play, or was it silent?
- Recurrence: Treat each event as its own looping timeline. So, pick a cycle length (say, every four loops of the clip), and then select whether the event plays on which of those four passes
Expression Automation
- Bitwig’s engine uniquely allows expression automation for notes and audio
- And since randomness was in the air, they brought in a visualized Spread range for any expression point. You can give note velocities randomization, but you can also give each piece of a chord its own panning. Or create a note that starts in tune and then drifts to a random pitch. Or, give each slice of an audio clip a slightly randomized gain
- With the editor open, all destined random values are visualized when the clip starts. And then again, the new values appear when the next loop cycle begins. When the interface and sound is this tightly connected, you’ve harnessed the chaos and can just make music
- You can even cast the dice yourself by clicking the Seed field of any clip. If you like what you hear, you can lock the same random pattern in for all Spread parameters—and any events with a Chance Operator
